Cold Climate Heat Pumps

Why Heat Pumps?

A heat pump does just what it says – it “pumps” heat from one location to another using a refrigerant. Because the refrigerant is the transfer medium, the heat can be moved in fairly small pipes, eliminating the need for ductwork. In the winter, the outside unit extracts heat from the outside air, even when temperatures are as low as minus 15 degrees, and moves that heat into your living space by way of an indoor air-handling unit.

We install Fujitsu cold climate air-to-air heat pumps exclusively because we believe they are the best product on the market for our climate. Fujitsu mini split heat pumps are the most efficient air to air heat pumps available for our climate here in Vermont.

Until recently heat pumps were considered to be less effective in our colder climate here in New England, but no more. The technology has advanced to a point where they are now very effective at low ambient temperatures.

The fact is, if you are using oil, propane, or electricity as your heat source, a heat pump can save you up to 70% of your heating costs.

The reason SRSE installs and promotes “Fujitsu” heat pumps is that we believe they are at the cutting edge of heat pump technology. They have a long proven track record for reliability and performance.

Because heat pumps use electricity to power their compressor and fans, many people who already have, or are installing solar electric, like the idea of producing their own electricity to power these super-efficient heating/cooling pumps.

Note to all heat pump (mini-split) customers:

Manufacturers recommend a thorough professional cleaning of both indoor and outdoor units once a year.  This ensures the continued high efficiency performance of the unit.

Conditions from site to site vary, but we have found it is the rare unit that does not need to be professionally cleaned annually.

Remember, these mini-splits run a lot of air through their heat exchangers and are not only heating (or cooling) the air in your home/studio/business, but also filtering the air.

The removable filters in the indoor heads should be removed and vacuumed every month.

For the annual cleanings we recommend We Clean Heat Pumps.
